HS Code Classification
What is an HS Code?
An HS Code (Harmonized System Code) is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers used to classify traded products. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it consists of 6 to 10 digits and is used by over 200 countries worldwide as the basis for customs tariffs, trade statistics, and regulations.
How does the HS Code system work?
The HS Code system uses a hierarchical structure: the first 2 digits identify the chapter, the next 2 digits identify the heading, and the next 2 digits identify the subheading. Countries may add additional digits beyond the 6-digit international standard for more specific classification.
Why is correct HS code classification important?
Correct HS code classification is critical for accurate customs declarations, proper duty payment, trade statistics, and regulatory compliance. Misclassification can lead to customs delays, penalties, overpayment of duties, or even legal issues.
How accurate is FioWind's AI classification?
Our AI achieves high accuracy by analyzing product descriptions using natural language understanding. It considers product materials, functions, and context to recommend the most appropriate HS code. However, for critical shipments, we recommend verifying results with official customs authorities or a licensed customs broker.
Can FioWind classify any product?
FioWind can classify a wide range of products across all HS chapters. The AI is trained on extensive trade data and product descriptions. For highly specialized or unusual products, the AI provides its best recommendation along with supporting details for your review.
How do I find my HS code manually?
You can browse our HS code directory by chapter and heading, or use the search function with a product description. The directory provides the complete classification structure for US and EU markets.
Duties & Tariffs
How is import duty calculated?
Import duty is calculated by applying the applicable duty rate to the customs value of the goods. For the US, the total duty rate may include the base HTSUS rate plus additional trade remedies such as Section 301, Section 232, and IEEPA tariffs. FioWind automatically calculates the combined rate for you.
What is Section 301?
Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 allows the United States to impose additional tariffs on imports from countries that engage in unfair trade practices, including intellectual property theft and forced technology transfer. Many products imported from China are subject to Section 301 tariffs, which can add 7.5% to 25% or more to the base duty rate.
What is Section 232?
Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 allows the US government to impose tariffs on imports that threaten national security. This has been used to impose additional tariffs on steel (25%) and aluminum (10%) imports from certain countries.
What is the de minimis threshold?
The de minimis threshold is the value below which imports may enter the US duty-free. Currently, the threshold is $800 per person per day for most goods under Section 321. However, certain products may be excluded from de minimis treatment, and some countries may be subject to restrictions. Note: trade policy regarding de minimis may change.
What is IEEPA?
The International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) allows the US President to regulate commerce during national emergencies. Recent IEEPA-related measures have imposed additional tariffs on goods from certain countries. FioWind includes these rates in its calculations when applicable.
What are Chapter 99 provisions?
Chapter 99 of the HTSUS contains temporary or permanent provisions that modify duty rates for specific products. These include additional duties under trade remedy programs, exclusions from certain tariffs, and special classification provisions. FioWind checks Chapter 99 rules automatically when calculating US import duties.
How often are duty rates updated?
We update our duty rate database regularly to reflect changes in trade policy, including new Section 301 actions, IEEPA measures, Chapter 99 modifications, and other trade remedies. Duty rates can change frequently due to executive orders, trade negotiations, and policy updates.
What countries do you support for duty calculation?
We currently support duty calculation for the United States, European Union, and Great Britain markets. We are continuously expanding our coverage to more regions and trade corridors.
